Abstract
The article addresses the ways in which ironies are cultivated and developed by Efrén Hernández (1904-1958) in the narrative discourse of some of his works. Studies of Hernández’ texts usually mention their irony, but only in general terms, and they almost never examine concrete examples of it; furthermore, they neither point out the type of irony implied nor its function within the discourse. Based on theoretical works devoted to irony (W. C. Booth, D. C. Muecke, C. Brooks, R.P. Warren), the article observes the peculiarities that characterize the narrative works by this singular writer from Guanajuato, particularly regarding the efficiency of a complex mechanism of digressions that generates and weaves, with fine irony, the structural web of its narrative discourse.
