Abstract
This article analyzes from the standpoint of animal rights and welfare both the controversial Exposition #1 by Costa Rican artist Guillermo Vargas (also known as Habacuc) and the criticism that defended this conceptual piece. With the aim of pitting ethical principles related to the nonhuman animal against the principle of creative freedom promulgated by the artistic community, I examine the discursive and rhetorical contradictions inherent to the arguments that criticized the perception of the dog in the piece as a sentient being worthy of moral consideration.
