Abstract
Goya’s Riña de gatos is emblematic when it comes to the discussion as to its authorship and the scene it represents. From being a complement of the rococo portrait, the animal now emerges as a subject of a dramatic scene. Borrowing from the symbolic tradition of the cat, the animal’s conclusive transformation through Goya, by way of Riña, synthesizes the two aesthetic trends of rococo, the kind and the aggressive. The effect is the making of a piece that both symbolizes the violent nature of the live being and attests to man’s taste for violent spectacles.
