Abstract

Don Quixote is the best-known piece of Spanish literature, perhaps even the text that represents Hispanic Studies as a discipline. Scholars from other fields, however, often rely on translations when interpreting Cervantes’s work. Alongside the familiar question of «free» vs. «faithful» versions of an «original» text, the great variety of translations of Don Quixote into English has meant, as John J. Allen once observed, that readers of different translations are reading different books. Emphasizing the connection between translation and interpretation, I provide a comparative analysis of seven English-language editions of Don Quixote. I show how the translations offer diverging presentations of key themes in Cervantes’s work, such as metafiction, relativism, and the relationship between individual and society.
