Abstract
Studying linguistic diachrony demands two types of sources, external and internal. External sources are independent of linguistic structures. The study of rock art as an external source constitutes a valid semiotic contribution to language history. Furthermore, the aesthetic quality of the Rock Art of the Southwest enhances its interest. Rock paintings contribute concepts and suggest interpretations to other sciences, although their contribution is particularly relevant in the case of Ethnolinguistics. They help unwind the ball of the complex genetic relationship among the Amerindian languages and their fragmentation before the arrival of the Europeans, and among all sorts of languages afterwards. Internal sources are based on the linguistic structures of languages and the data provided by their 1 Francisco A.
