Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze Romeo Castellucci’s staging of the twelve-tone opera by Arnold Schoenberg, Moses und Aaron (1926-1932), first performed in May 2016 at the Teatro Real de Madrid, and to examine the Spanish capital’s response to the piece. Through the stage presence of a real, live Charolais bull –a metaphor of the golden calf in the Book of Exodus– I first argue that the animal’s physical presence alludes to the director’s understanding of the pre-tragic character of the theater as a ritual. I then turn to consider the symbolic implications deriving from the Biblical animal and its transposition from the sacred scripture to the performative arts. Finally, I explore the ethical dilemma resulting from the decision to feature a live animal in a stage production. I contend that such decision stems from the director’s vision of the animal as an agent of civic activism that contributes to the conceptualization of the operatic topography as a space of dissidence.
